Department of Plasma Physics and Technology
Plasma Physics is the science of studying the fourth fundamental state of matter consisting of charged particles (electrons, ions and neutral atoms). In a generally accepted and well-known definition, plasma is a quasi-neutral ionized gas that exhibits collective behavior. Having comprised from charged particles, the plasma dynamics is affected significantly by the internal and external electric and magnetic fields. Plasma is experimentally generated by ionizing different gases by various methods. Almost more than 99 % of the visible matter in the universe is in the state of natural plasma in vast range of density and temperature. Some main examples of plasma environments are: the Earth’s ionosphere, Aurora, Solar wind, the atmosphere of Sun and other stars, the atmosphere of neutron stars, accretion disk of black holes, the interplanetary, the interstellar and intergalactic mediums.
On the other hand, plasma can be produced experimentally in laboratories and has obtained tremendous applications. The gases inside fluorescent lamps, neon lamps, discharge gases, the jets of missiles and rockets and very hot flames are some examples of artificially produced plasmas. These types of plasmas are used in plasma coating, medical industry,  plasma displays, plasma thruster,  military devices and applications, Plasma radars, Thermonuclear fusion devices  (such as Tokamak), plasma cutter,  plasma arc welding, plasma spray, Automotive industry, electron gun, plasma accelerator, MHD electricity generator, laser-plasma interaction applications.
The close relationship between plasma physics and other research areas and fields in physics such as astronomy and astrophysics, space physics, space weather, laser physics, nuclear physics and Nano physics, has turned it into a popular studying field for master and PhD students and interesting research field for researchers.

Since the establishment of the faculty of physics, Plasma physics has been very active research field as a subdivision of the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics. Since 2021, the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology has been established as a new department of the Faculty with eight academic staff including two professor, four associate professor and two assistant professor. At the moment, tens of graduate students are studying in different subjects such as Plasma Physics, Plasma Technology, Plasma Engineering, Nano Physics (Nano Photonics - Nano Structures) in the M.Sc and Ph.D programs. Also, a few postdocs are doing research in the Department. The Department is equipped with a few educational and advanced research labs: Plasma Physics Lab, Advanced Plasma Physics Lab, Low-Temperature Plasma Lab., Plasma Focus Lab. The academic staff of the group are doing research in various analytical, numerical and experimental fields related to plasma physics and technology and have extensive links and joint projects with other national and international researchers and each year they publish many valuable papers in the national and international journals.
